On 8 July, Susanne Jaspars presented a joint paper with C Sathyamala and Tamer Abd Elkreem in the panel on ‘The political economy of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and development. The paper presented an initial global analysis comparing key findings from Sudan, India and the UK, and asked the question ‘Digital food assistance as a form of colonialism’? It covered the ways in which marginalised people are excluded from digitalised food assistance and welfare, but focussed on issues of coerced inclusion, the extraction of data, and the role of US corporations. Feedback on the paper, and learning from other papers and panels on aspects of digitalisation will be used in the final global comparative report for the project.
