Iris Lim participated in the @ESRC Festival of Social Science, held on 3rd and 6th November, SOAS The festival, had the dual themes of ‘Lifelong Wellbeing’ and ‘Migration and Marginalisation’, Iris was one of many SOAS researchers, from various disciplines, who attended.
Iris led a zine-making session, crafted to guide participants 13-to-18-years of age from migrant backgrounds learning ‘English as an Additional Language’, through a journey of self-publishing and storytelling. Guided by the themes from our project, participants created mini-magazines reflecting on the relationship between their favourite foods from home, connection to their cultural heritage, and well-being. This immersive session encouraged young learners to delve into the realms of creative self-expression and advocacy for broader representation. Participants shared how their favourite food served as a bridge to cultural heritage and community ties, showcasing how something as universal as food can have such unique and personal connotations.
Reflecting on the festival, we are reminded of the power of collaboration, creativity, and community in exploring and addressing crucial social issues. We extend our gratitude to all the participants and attendees who enriched this event with their presence and engagement.
