From 5-7 November, the ‘digitalising food assistance’ team participated in the World Conference on Humanitarian Studies. Susanne had co-organised a panel on ‘governing digital risks in humanitarian action’, in which Tamer presented a paper on ‘the causes and risks of digital failures in Sudan’s crisis’, arguing that failure of digital communication and financial systems can contribute to the risk of famine in situations of war. It also builds on our earlier blog on Sudan’s crisis. Susanne presented a paper by the whole team on ‘the evolution of digital risk in food assistance’. You will find a blog summarising on our paper here, where we argue that digitalisation is part of a long-term global process of globalisation and neoliberalisation and which comes with a number of risks. Susanne also co-organised a panel on ‘food security and famine’, in which Tamer presented a paper on Sudan’s large mechanised agricultural scheme in Gezira and how it has been impacted by privatisation and now a large-scale influx of displaced populations from Khartoum.
