On 21 May 2025, Yasmin Houamed presented “Food Insecurity in a Food Assistance Hotspot” at the Future Food Symposium 2025, hosted by the University of Birmingham Business School
Her presentation built on fieldwork conducted in Birmingham between December 2024 and May 2025, and revealed the on-the-ground impacts of the widespread adoption of digitalised food assistance on marginalised communities’ food security.
Using concepts from political economy, ‘regimes of practices’ , and the structural causes of food insecurity, the presentation argues that digitalisation has resulted in a regime of food assistance practices that compensates for the challenges of accessing digitalised assistance and which does not necessarily address the structural causes of food insecurity.
