The UK team co-delivered an interactive workshop “Digital Solutions for Food Insecurity: Can Technology Address Food Access Challenges?” This hands-on session welcomed 13–18-year-old students learning English as an Additional Language. Participants were encouraged to reflect on the local challenges surrounding food access and brainstorm potential digital solutions, such as mobile apps or platforms.

The session fostered creativity and problem-solving, with students proposing innovative ideas that combined their understanding of community needs with emerging technologies. Discussions revolved around how digital tools can bridge gaps in food access, while also highlighting the potential barriers to inclusivity and effectiveness.

Reflecting on the event, we were reminded of the importance of engaging with young learners to explore complex social challenges. Their perspectives offered fresh insights into how technology might support food equity and well-being, while also underscoring the unique challenges faced by marginalised communities.

This year, the Festival of Social Sciences took place on the 7th and 8th of November, with over 40 universities across the UK hosting events focused on the theme ‘Our Digital Lives.’ As part of this nationwide celebration, SOAS, supported by the ESRC Impact Acceleration Award 2023, organised a series of activities exploring ‘Migration, Marginalisation, Displacement, and Minorities.’
